The District Chief Executive for Sekyere East, Hon. Abrahim Adams, together with the District Management has met with drivers and leadership of transport unions in the district to address concerns over the recent increment in transportation fares.
The meeting, which was held at the District Assembly, became necessary following reports that some drivers had increased fares without any approval from the national leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ministry of Transport.
Hon. Abrahim Adams in his address cautioned drivers against arbitrary fare increments, noting that no directive has been given at the national level for any upward adjustment. He stressed that such unauthorized increases burden residents, especially traders, students and farmers, and undermine government efforts to stabilize the economy.
He urged the transport unions to ensure their members revert to the approved fares and to use the appropriate channels to seek redress for their concerns.
The leadership of the transport unions on their part pledged to comply and educate their members, while calling on government to also consider the rising cost of fuel, spare parts and maintenance that affects their operations.
Management of the Assembly assured that it will continue to monitor the transport situation in the district to protect the interest of passengers and ensure law and order.
The meeting ended with a consensus for continuous engagement and enforcement of approved fares in the Sekyere East District.
